Small caps have delivered a handsome 35% CAGR over last 3yrs. Ravi believes while some pockets of small caps are clearly discounting the most optimistic earnings projections and therefore best avoided, there are several segments especially in the manufacturing and capital goods spaces which have structural growth prospects. Small cap earnings are projected to grow18-20% over next 2 yrs and valuations are now at 19x – not in bubble zone at an overall level, not cheap – but several stocks in small caps continue to look attractive.
Sundaram Small Cap outperformed peers last year on the back of good picks in capital goods, PSU banks, IT and consumer discretionary spaces. In recent months, as the rally spread into lower quality small caps, the fund’s outperformance shrank.
The fund has recently added exposures in small cap IT stocks and capital goods stocks.
